Inside HBO’s Game of Thrones / Bryan Cogman

Bookworm's Wishlist Fantasy

I have to admit, I’ve been very slow to take on to the Game of Thrones. I haven’t read that much high fantasy and being a Netflix client HBO’s series have just kind of passed by… But, now I got my hands on the Inside HBO’s Game of Thrones by Brian Cogman and I was lured in. So, before I knew it, I was reading the books.

Game of Thrones

Game of Thrones is quite a different experience. As Inside HBO’s Game of Thrones says, this series is very different from your average high fantasy in the way that the characters are infinitely more complex and you never really know what will happen next. All conventions of the genre seem to have been dumped in the box of memories. George R. R. Martin has created a raw and terrible world and its characters are only coping with the surroundings in which they have to survive. Yet, quite often they don’t survive.

Reading the books is on the one hand quite racking, on the other it’s impossible to put the book down. The vast cast of characters, different worlds and all the politics and scheming are very skilfully weaved together. I’d certainly like to know how George R. R. Martin keeps all the threads in order!

So, there’s really no other way than read through the whole story. And after that, move on to the HBO series…
